I started following you on Bluesky a few weeks back. Facebook and Twitter do indeed suck now. The annoying part of all this is having all of one's contacts scattered all over these platforms, and ultimately, having to keep using some of them because of that. Who are other good science people to follow on Bluesky? I'm looking to stick to that alone for now until it's clear which one of all these Twitter-likes will be the actual Twitter successor, because the situation right now is chaotic. I suppose chances are the actual successor won't be any of these, but something entirely new, since at the moment they all feel too much like "hey, it's Twitter but with another name." It seems like a really bad time for text-based social platforms. But then again, I guess it's always been.

Kudos for making a stand. I don't use SM myself, just dabble when I want to find out about something. I feel conflicted about Mr Musk who is an absolute n*b at times, but then behind the progressive thinking pushing SpaceX and others which have genuinely made a difference.

I understand you leaving Xitter. Here in Europe it's not as bad as in the US. Not yet. I managed to block Musk, Trump and a lot of extreme right activists but the platform is clearly deteriorating. I'm still debating with myself whether I should stay on or leave this sinking ship. Problem is there's no real alternative over here. Is Bluesky also available on my side of the planet? Good science is a great reason for me to kick Xitter to the curb an join Bluesky.

As soon as he bought Twitter or whatever the hell that silly &#@* calls it. I closed out of it. He's poison

Ya know that book you mention above? "Under...something or other"? Too bad there's no way we can order it. Oh, well...(snerk - I'll show myself out 😜)

Still on the thing formerly known as Twitter, but rarely, and mostly only to see tweets (are they still called that?) from those I admire and enjoy reading (a few authors & pundits). I'll probably keep it, pretty much because I'm lazy, and I don't see much of the dreck that Musk lets propagate. Depends on how much I feel like giving him the metaphorical bird. Phil, since you already have an Instagram account, have you thought of signing up on Threads? I don't have an Instagram account, don't want one, and one must have one to subscribe to Threads. <sigh>That link to Blue Sky - was that an invite? Since it has a "create account" button? If so, I may have to give it a shot.

Have you tried Discord? I've been using that for over a year, and I find I use it more and more, and other apps less and less. I still kinda use insta to keep in touch with people, but 99% of my actual conversations happen on Discord. It reminds me of late 90's chat rooms, and there aren't ads or Nazis 🖖🏼

I can empathize with your conflict to leave Twitter. I, too, got fed up with the profit-over-quality of FB and Twitter so I left both (Twitter most recently in Nov.'22). Elon's antics are what drove me away from Twitter and into Mastodon -- every day that I read something about him screwing something up I am so happy that I left that platform.

Which, funny enough, outside of the Discovery Channel shows I watched years ago, I never knew you were elsewhere in the public eye. It was actually in Mastodon -- specifically universeodon.com as that's the one I joined -- that I 'found' & followed you (as an admirer, not as Jesus, let's keep the ego in check, LOL). That then led me to this subscription. I even left you a question that may be good for a newsletter <wink>. So there's a point scored for Mastodon if anyone is counting.

Anyway, I'm glad you left Twitter. Good move and I hope it inspires others to do the same.

Good call. I will let them delete my accounts which may already be gone, who knows. I’m following you on mastodon and bluesky etc

I was never a big tweeter, but I enjoyed other social networks like appdotnet

There’s no fixing twitter, it’s gone and there’s no value

Feels like the Dementors are running Earth now. I was hoping to live out my life before the Xitter hit the fan, but it looks like even that was false hope.

yeah, agree. I stopped using twitter a year or more before the musk arrived. After he did his free-speech for all except those I don't like routine, I deleted my account completely.

I am using Threads now. I've connected with various scientists (climate, biology), artists (painters, writers, photographers), and activists. I don't know why people keep saying nothing is happening there. I've loads of good info and links to read from the people I follow, and have had some (and seen) some respectful conversations with people.

If I get a Bluesky invite, I'll try it. Ed Yong is on it so between you and him, I could find some good people to follow.

I walked as soon as Musk bought it. I knew what was going to happen, as did most sentient beings with any common sense.

I'm looking at Threads, but have made no decision yet. I haven't been invited to BlueSky, and I found Mastodon to difficult to use.

Phil, totally random question. I see a lot of articles saying a planet masses so many times Earth. Does that translate directly into g's at the surface? Or is it more complicated then that?

Wish you'd do more on Mastodon. It was either you or George Takei that led me there. Nice little community. If Bluesky isn't open to all, it doesn't do many of your followers much good. At least we have you here.

I had to quit when they adopted the giant white-on-black X logo. It's uncomfortably creepy and dystopian feeling, especially when compared to the friendly blue bird.

Couldn’t get to the Financial Times’ review. Had to subscribe. :-( Hey — so so proud of you, bro. Your book is so awesome, and I’m glad the important people think so too.
